    Novel ordering of the pyrochlore Heisenberg antiferromagnet with the ferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor interaction

    The ordering property of the classical pyrochlore Heisenberg antiferromagnet with the ferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor interaction is investigated by means of a Monte Carlo simulation. The model is found to exhibit a first-order transition at a finite temperature into a peculiar ordered state. While the spin structure factor, i.e., the thermal average of the squared Fourier amplitude of the spin, exhibits a finite long-range order characterized by the commensurate spin order of the period four, the thermal average of the spin itself almost vanishes. It means that, although the amplitude of the spin Fourier component is long-range ordered, the associated phase degree of freedom remains to be fluctuating.Comment: Proceedings of the Highly Frustrated Magnetism (HFM2006) conference.     A New 100-GHz Band Front-End System with a Waveguide-Type Dual-Polarization Sideband-Separating SIS Receiver for the NRO 45-m Radio Telescope

    We developed a waveguide-type dual-polarization sideband-separating SIS receiver system of the 100-GHz band for the 45-m radio telescope at the Nobeyama Radio Observatory, Japan. This receiver is composed of an ortho-mode transducer and two sideband-separating SIS mixers, which are both based on the waveguide technique. The receiver has four intermediate frequency bands of 4.0--8.0 GHz. Over the radio frequency range of 80--120 GHz, the single-sideband receiver noise temperatures are 50--100 K and the image rejection ratios are greater than 10 dB. We developed new matching optics for the telescope beam as well as new IF chains for the four IF signals. The new receiver system was installed in the telescope, and we successfully observed the 12CO, 13CO and C18O emission lines simultaneously toward the Sagittarius B2 region to confirm the performance of the receiver system. The SSB noise temperature of the system, including the atmosphere, became approximately half of that of the previous receiver system. The Image Rejection Ratios (IRRs) of the two 2SB mixers were calculated from the 12CO and HCO+ spectra from the W51 giant molecular cloud, resulting in > 20 dB for one polarization and > 12 dB for the other polarization.Comment: 10 pages, 13 figures, Accepted for publication in PASJ, version with high resolution figures is available via http://www.nro.nao.ac.jp/library/report/list.htm

    Relationship between the Physical Properties and Hand of Jean Fabric

    We investigated the distinctive characteristics of jean fabrics (denim fabrics obtained from jeans) and compared the physical properties and the hand. We used 13 kinds of jean fabric from commercial jeans and 26 other fabric types. The physical properties were measured using the Kawabata evaluation system, and the fabric hand was evaluated by 20 subjects using a semantic differential method. To characterise the hand of jean fabrics compared with other fabrics, we used principal component analysis and obtained three principal components. We found that jean fabrics were characterised by the second principal component, which was affected by feelings of thickness and weight. We further characterised the jean fabrics according to ‘softness & smoothness’ and ‘non-fullness’, depending on country of origin and type of manufacturer. The three principal components were analysed using multiple linear regression to characterise the components according to the physical properties.     N-Cadherin Expressed on Malignant T Cell Lymphoma Cells is Functional, and Promotes Heterotypic Adhesion Between the Lymphoma Cells and Mesenchymal Cells Expressing N-Cadherin

    Cadherins are Ca2+-dependent cell–cell adhesion molecules, and are involved in the formation and maintenance of the organocellular architecture. Using a combination of molecular biologic and biochemical methods, we analyzed cadherins expressed on cultured human malignant lymphoma cell lines (adult T cell lymphomas, human T cell leukemia virus type 1-negative T cell lines, and thymus-derived lymphoma cell lines), and obtained evidence that N-cadherin is the major cadherin expressed on these cells. These cells were found to form cell aggregates in a Ca2+-dependent manner, and more importantly to coaggregate and adhere with cells expressing N-cadherin, suggesting that N-cadherin on lymphoma cells is functionally active. Therefore, N-cadherin expressed on lymphoma cells could underlie the frequent invasion of these cells into the mesenchymal tissue in the skin and the central nervous system

    Evaluation of Program Code Caching for Mobile Agent Migrations

    Abstract: Mobile agents are able to migrate among machines to achieve their tasks. This feature is attractive to design, implement, and maintain distributed systems because we can implement both client-side and server-side programming in one mobile agent. However, it involves the increase of data traffic for mobile agent migrations. In this paper, we propose program code caching to reduce the data traffic caused by mobile agent migrations. A mobile agent consists of many program codes that define a task executed in each machine they migrate; thus, the mobile agent migration involves the transfer of their program codes. Therefore, our method reduces the number of the transfer of program codes by using program code cache. We have implemented our method on a mobile agent framework called Maglog and conducted experiments on a meeting scheduling system

    An Electrophoretic Study of Genetic Differentiation in 40 Populations of Bufo japonicus Distributed in Japan

    Electrophoretic analyses of 14 kinds of enzymes and two kinds of blood proteins were made in 525 toads of 40 populations of Bufo japonicus distributed widely in Japan. These populations belong to five subspecies, B. j. montanus, B. j. japonicus (including B. j. formosus and B. j. hokkaidoensis), B. j. torrenticola, B. j. yakushimensis and B. j. miyakonis. The enzymes and blood proteins are controlled by genes at 22 loci. The fixation indexes calculated according to WRIGHT (1978) showed that the Miyako population of B. j. miyakonis is remarkably differentiated from the other 39 populations belonging to four subspecies. The rates of average heterozygosity were 1.0∿21.7%, 10.70n the average. The proportions of polymorphic loci in the 40 populations were 5∿65%, 36.00n the average. The mean numbers of alleles per locus were 1.05∿1.95,1.46 on the average. Examination of the geographic distribution of alleles at the 22 loci in the 40 populations of B. japonicus showed that there are distinct gradients from east to west in the alleles at the AAT-A, IDH-B, LDH-B, ME-B and MPI loci. Some of the alleles at the Ab and Hb loci are abundantly gathered in the populations distributed in some districts. At each of the 15 loci other than the foregoing seven, one of the alleles is overwhelmingly abundant in all the 40 populations or the 39 populations excluding the Miyako population which is exclusively or partly occupied by another allele. The genetic relationships among the 40 populations of Bufo japonicus distributed in Japan were conjectured by estimating the genetic distances by the method of NEI (1975) and a dendrogram was drawn using the UPGMA clustering method. It was found that B. japonicus has evolved into the eastern and western groups, except that B. j. miyakonis seems to have come from the mainland of eastern Asia

    A Distinct Subset of Fibroblastic Stromal Cells Constitutes the Cortex-Medulla Boundary Subcompartment of the Lymph Node

    The spatiotemporal regulation of immune responses in the lymph node (LN) depends on its sophisticated tissue architecture, consisting of several subcompartments supported by distinct fibroblastic stromal cells (FSCs). However, the intricate details of stromal structures and associated FSC subsets are not fully understood. Using several gene reporter mice, we sought to discover unrecognized stromal structures and FSCs in the LN. The four previously identified FSC subsets in the cortex are clearly distinguished by the expression pattern of reporters including PDGFRβ, CCL21-ser, and CXCL12. Herein, we identified a unique FSC subset expressing both CCL21-ser and CXCL12 in the deep cortex periphery (DCP) that is characterized by preferential B cell localization. This subset was clearly different from CXCL12highLepRhigh FSCs in the medullary cord, which harbors plasma cells. B cell localization in the DCP was controlled chiefly by CCL21-ser and, to a lesser extent, CXCL12. Moreover, the optimal development of the DCP as well as medulla requires B cells. Together, our findings suggest the presence of a unique microenvironment in the cortex-medulla boundary and offer an advanced view of the multi-layered stromal framework constructed by distinct FSC subsets in the LN

    Validation of the plasma-wall interaction simulation code ERO2.0 by the analysis of tungsten migration in the open divertor region in the Large Helical Device

    Tungsten migration in the open divertor region in the Large Helical Device is analyzed for validating the three-dimensional plasma-wall interaction simulation code ERO2.0. The ERO2.0 simulation reproduced the measurement of localized tungsten migration from a tungsten-coated divertor plate installed in the inboard side of the torus. The simulation also explained the measurement of the high tungsten areal density in the private side on a carbon divertor plate, next to the tungsten-coated divertor plate, by the tungsten prompt redeposition in plasma discharges for a low magnetic field strength in a counterclockwise toroidal direction. However, the simulation disagreed with the measurement of low tungsten areal density on the plasma-wetted areas on the carbon divertor plates, which indicated that the actual erosion rate of the redeposited tungsten should be much higher than that used in the ERO2.0 code
